Jennifer McCarty (BA, Anthropology, Oberlin College) has been the Administrative Coordinator for the 49th State Fellows Program since December 2007. She has held positions at the Kodiak Maritime Museum, the Smithsonian Institution’s Arctic Studies Center in Anchorage, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. While at Oberlin she arranged to study away at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for a semester to learn more about her Iñupiaq heritage, and stayed there for the summer. Two years later, she returned to UAF to finish her Oberlin degree there, and has remained in Alaska ever since. A soprano, Jennifer sings opera, classical, choral and contemporary music and has been in operas, a musical and various concerts in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kodiak. She is also a member of the Iñupiaq dance group, Iknaaniktut.
