Joining the Seawolf Debate Team

The traveling team of the Seawolf Debate squad has a long history of success in regional, national, and international competition.  Our competitors dedicate themselves to excellence in debating through a rigorous practice and research schedule.  Only those who stand out for their ability and dedication to the team will be selected; inclusion in the traveling team is an honor.

This brief introduction to the traveling team outlines how you would ready yourself for consideration.  This program of preparation does not guarantee your inclusion on the traveling team, but failure to meet the minimum expectations for preparedness guarantees your exclusion from consideration.

I'm interested in joining the traveling team.  What should I do?

1. Regularly read the Council on Foreign Relations website, the Op/Ed section of the New York Times, and the Economist.
2. Attend all Tuesday evening (5:30-8:30) and Friday morning (9:30-12:30) practices.
3. Complete two briefing assignments.
4. Have at least one individual coaching session per week with either Steve or Shawn.

But I really want to travel... Is there anything else I can do?

1. Attend all activities of the Alaska Debating Society, and actively participate in leadership of the organization.
2. Judge at two local high school speech and debate tournaments.
3. Complete additional briefing assignments.
4. Have at least two individual coaching sessions per week with either Steve or Shawn.

Most importantly be enthusiastic about improving your speaking skills, be courteous to fellow team members (both current and potential), and honor the efforts and accomplishments of those who have gone before you.
