There are numerous national scholarships to help you fund your international experience. These scholarships are competitive so careful and thoughtful planning is essential. The scholarships have specific criteria so you will need to research which scholarships are right for you. The scholarship listing here contains scholarships for studying abroad and doing graduate school abroad. You may also be interested in doing research or working abroad after graduation, and there are scholarships to help you do that as well.
Undergraduate Study Abroad
Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia. The Gilman International Scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. A limited number of $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found on the Gilman website. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need, with the average award being $4,000. This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

UAA Study Abroad Scholarship for NCSA/AHA Programs
The University of Alaska Anchorage will award a $1000.00 annual scholarship for study abroad on a Northwest Consortium for Study Abroad (NCSA) program. NCSA programs are available in: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, and Spain. Most sites integrate language study with courses taught in English. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Preference will go to students who demonstrate how the particular NCSA program integrates into or enhances their academic program at UAA. NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarships are designed to provide American undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. NSEP Boren scholarships are merit based. Award amounts are based on the study abroad costs and financial aid information provided by the applicant. The maximum award is $8,000 for a summer, $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for a full academic year. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by US graduate students (i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
Each year, Phi Kappa Phi offers 38 scholarships of $1000 to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. UAA has a Phi Kappa Phi chapter, so all UAA students are eligible. Students need to have completed 30 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Student’s study abroad plan should relate directly to their academic preparation, potential career choice, and commitment to the welfare of others. Students must also be returning to UAA after their study abroad experience.

Rotary International
The Rotary Foundation’s oldest and best-known program is Ambassadorial Scholarships, established in 1947. Today, the Ambassadorial Scholarships Program of the Rotary Foundation is the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships program.
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses and some educational supplies up to U.S. $25,000 or its equivalent.

UAA Kibrik & Bergelson Study in Russia Scholarship
Kibrik & Bergelson Study in Russia Scholarship offers financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses including air travel to or from Russia to University of Alaska Anchorage students who are studying in Russia. Preference will be given to those that are majoring in language, communications, and/or anthropology. Applicant must demonstrate academic excellence, a clear interest in the study of Russia, a solid connection between the study program in Russia and the applicant’s academic and professional goals, and leadership potential.

CANADA
Elizabeth Tower Endowment for Canadian Studies
In 2004, UAA announced the creation of the Elizabeth Tower Endowment for Canadian Studies. The goal of this endowment is to increase the visibility of Canadian studies at UAA and in the community and to improve opportunities for UAA students wanting to study in Canada. Funds will be made available on a case-by-case basis to students who have demonstrated an interest in Canada by excelling in INTL 301 or another course with significant Canadian content, have a strong academic record, or show promise, and have clear study plans. Application Procedure: Please write a letter to the members of Elizabeth Tower Endowment Committee stating your name and grade point average, describing the nature of study in Canada you wish to pursue and explaining why you believe the committee should fund your studies. This letter must be received by April 1st. Your letter should be accompanied by a letter of reference from a professor who can speak to your interests in studying in Canada. The Killam Fellowships Program
This scholarship program provides $5,000 per semester for undergraduate students to participate in a bi-national residential exchange program between Canada and the United States of America. Scholarship recipients spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country. Students are also awarded $500 for Health Insurance and $1000 for in-Canada Travel. In addition, students get to attend an orientation in Ottawa in the Fall and attend a seminar in the Spring in Washington DC. The program is designed to encourage exceptional undergraduate students in the United States and Canada by providing a unique opportunity for academic exchange. UAA students can apply as part of the open competition, allowing for participation from (and to) any accredited degree granting college or university in either country. This program, which is administered by the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America, is supported by the American Killam Trusts, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and the Foundation. It is an integral part of the Foundation's multidimensional strategy to foster mutual understanding between the citizens of Canada and the citizens of the United States.

GERMANY Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals
This full-year scholarship includes a round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, living stipend, program-related travel costs and health insurance. The participants receive two months of German language training, one semester of study at a German university and a five-month internship in a German-speaking work environment. Students need to demonstrate clear career goals and work experience.

DAAD Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service, or “DAAD” as it’s known by its German acronym, provides support for over 70,000 people every year, making it the largest international exchange organization in the world. They offer grants and scholarships for undergraduates through faculty members to spend time in or conduct research on Germany. Some programs include intensive language grants, support for conferences, the “High Tech in Germany” summer program for engineers, graduate grants for research/study, a study scholarship for graduating seniors and much more.

Freeman-ASIA
Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. This award funds study in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be enrolled and in good academic standing and must currently receive financial aid or have verifiable need for financial assistance.

Bridging Scholarship
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply

Japanese Government Monbusho Scholarship
The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (Monbusho) announces the Monbusho Scholarship Competition. The Monbusho Scholarship enables foreign students from 110 different countries to study for 1 - 2 years in Japan. The Monbusho works in cooperation with local, national, and private universities to promote these scholarships. Several scholarship categories are open to U.S. citizens including Japanese Studies Scholarship for undergraduates to study Japanese language and culture, the In-Service Training for Teachers Scholarship for pre-collegiate Japanese instructors to train in methods of teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and the Research Fellowship for post graduates to research a broad range of topics in Japanese universities and educational institutions.

Graduate Studies Abroad
Rhodes
The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902 and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars were elected in 1904. Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

Marshall
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. The Scholarships are tenable at any British university and cover two years of study in any discipline at primarily the graduate level, leading to the award of a British University degree.

Mitchell
The U.S.-Ireland Alliance has established the George J. Mitchell Scholarships to educate future American leaders about Ireland and to provide tomorrow’s leaders with an understanding about, an interest in and an affinity with the island from which 44 million Americans claim descent. Scholars are eligible to attend institutions of higher learning in Ireland, including the seven universities in the Republic Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland, for one academic year of graduate study.

In establishing the Gates Cambridge Scholars program, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation hopes to create a network of future leaders from around the world who will bring new vision and commitment to improving the life circumstances of citizens in their respective countries. Over time, it is anticipated that Gates Cambridge Scholars will become leaders in helping to address global problems related to health, equity, technology and learning—all areas that the Foundation is deeply engaged in.

The U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Most grantees plan their own programs. Projects may include university coursework, independent research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination thereof. Recent projects have involved cancer research in the UK, free market development in Mauritius, women’s rights in Chile and contemporary artistic expression in India. Along with opportunities for intellectual, professional and artistic growth, the Fulbright Program offers invaluable opportunities to meet and work with people of the host country, sharing daily life as well as professional and creative insights. The program promotes cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding on a person-to-person basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity and intellectual freedom.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET)
Founded in 1987, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program aims to enhance foreign language education in Japan, and to promote international exchange at the local level by fostering ties between the Japanese youth and foreign youth. Currently, the JET Program is one of the longest and most successful exchange programs between Japan and the United States. College and university graduates are invited to experience a year in Japan, employed as a Coordinator of International Relations, assisting local government agencies carry out international activities, as an Assistant English Teacher in a public school, or as a Sports Exchange Advisor. One may apply for any one of the three positions but not all. The program provides a very competitive salary, training orientations prior to departure, travel expenses to Japan, housing assistance and health insurance. The program is conducted by local authorities and other organizations of Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship
As the countries of the world become more interdependent, the Robert Bosch Foundation recognizes the importance of familiarizing American professionals with the political, economic, and cultural environment of Europe and of the Federal Republic of Germany. To further this goal, and to strengthen the ties of friendship and understanding between the United States and Germany, the foundation sponsors a fellowship program that enables young American professionals to participate in an intensive work and study program in Germany. The program provides young American professionals (ages 23-34) with two high-level work placements in the federal government and private sector in Germany. Three seminars taking place throughout Europe provide an in-depth understanding of issues facing Germany and the European Union today. Candidates are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration, economics, journalism, law, political science and public policy. Since 1984, over 300 Americans have been given this unique opportunity. Most Bosch Fellowship alumni become leaders in their professional fields, and commit themselves to the long-term stabilization and growth of German-American relations.
