As you start planning for conducting research overseas, you will find there are many logistical concerns. However, UAA can provide you with many resources. There are many faculty members at UAA involved with international research projects. By applying for international fellowships, you will be able to utilize the resources of the fellowship organization. Also through established international internships and study abroad programs, you can use the infrastructure already established by the programs. With carefully planning and exploring your resources, UAA can provide you with a lot of support while you are abroad.
Faculty Mentors
UAA faculty are involved with international research projects throughout the globe. By acting as a research assistant or expanding on the research that they are already conducting, can be a great avenue to start international research. Talk to faculty within your department. Find out what research projects they are currently working on. Talk to them about your interest in international research. Even if they are not working on a project that fits your interests, they may be able to connect you with another faculty or community member conducting research.
International Fellowships
In addition to helping you set up your research overseas, International Fellowships will help fund your research. Knowing the importance of sharing research across the global community of scholars, foundations have set up fellowship opportunities to help students conduct research overseas.
The most well known international fellowships are through the Fulbright Foundation. The U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Most grantees plan their own programs. Projects may include university coursework, independent research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination thereof. Recent projects have involved cancer research in the UK, free market development in Mauritius, women’s rights in Chile and contemporary artistic expression in India. Along with opportunities for intellectual, professional and artistic growth, the Fulbright Program offers invaluable opportunities to meet and work with people of the host country, sharing daily life as well as professional and creative insights. The program promotes cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding on a person-to-person basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity and intellectual freedom. The program is for Seniors and recent graduates in all fields of study. The deadline to apply is in late October. Check out the Fulbright website for more information www.iie.org/fulbright
International Internships
International Internships provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable work and international experience. Internships provide a great structure for international research because you can use the expertise of your work colleagues. UAA partners with IE3 Global Internships which arranges supervised, practical, international work experiences throughout the world. Internships range from 10 weeks to six months of full-time work. You can earn academic credit at UAA for your internship experience, allowing you to gain valuable skills while working towards your degree. Internships are an increasingly important and integral component of a well-rounded education and an international internship is an excellent way to gain insight into a culture, an industry, and an organization.
Visit the IE3 Global Internship website to start exploring your opportunities.
