Summer 2008 on August 14-22, the Office of New Student Orientation in partnership with the Recreation and Activities Department hosted the first-ever outdoor experience orientation, Big Wild Orientation (BWO).

(group facilitation and discussion is a major part of BWO)
BWO is a week long journey in the second only wilderness canoe trail system in the U.S. (Boundary Waters is the other). On this journey college and college life will be the topics of discussion and learning. The focus of BWO is to prepare and aid the new student for the transition to college and independent life while fostering academic and personal success.
BWO is a student led program allowing for peer interaction. BWO is supervised by a university professional staff member. All student leaders have undergone training in group facilitation, canoeing and wilderness first aid.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you, as a student, to discover Alaska and yourself. The participants form strong bonds living and traveling together experiencing an amazing piece of Alaska. Typically the students who attend BWO experience long lasting friendships that continue after graduation.
