- Chancellor Elaine Maimon and student leaders kicked off UAA’s annual voter registration and civic engagement drive on Friday, September 10, at 2 p.m. in the Student Union (formerly the Campus Center). Chancellor Maimon and husband Mort officially registered to vote in Alaska as part of the event.
The two-month voting awareness campaign will culminate with the final KTUU Senatorial debate in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium on October 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The civic engagement associated with registering and exercising the right to vote is a top priority for UAA’s new chancellor.
“I believe it is inherent in the missions of universities and colleges to develop good citizens who participate fully in their communities. Becoming civically engaged as a young person leads to increased levels of participation as people mature,” said Maimon.
Maimon and the USUAA student government leaders will host a “Town Meeting and Pizza Feast” in celebration of UAA Democracy Day at the Student Union Lounge on Tuesday, September 21, between 1:30 and 3 p.m.
The kickoff of “Game Night” will follow later that evening and will feature a table tennis match between UAA Interim Provost Theodore L. Kassier and Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Gebe Ejigu.
The Division of Elections will provide voter registrar training for students, staff, faculty, retirees and alumni at its Dimond Center offices at noon on September 16 and 17. Approximately 40 UAA connected folks are currently trained registrars or have signed up for the training.
So many were interested that the Division scheduled UAA-only training sessions. Other activities scheduled throughout September and into October include a competitive voter registration drive which will take place in the residence halls and student apartments between September 17 and October 3, the final day to register to vote in the November election.
The “Last Chance” voter registration activity is scheduled in conjunction with the Student Activities Comedy Series event with Cain Lopez at 8 p.m. on October 1st in the Student Union Den.
On October 25th, the USUAA has tentatively scheduled a Candidates Fair in the Student Union from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Other Anchorage residents are welcome to drop by the UAA campus to avail themselves of centrally located voter registrars or they can visit theDivision of Elections online.
