2008 Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium By: Staff Apr 3, 2008 Events held to honor outstanding research and creative work by UAA’s undergraduate students
ANCHORAGE, AK – The University of Alaska Anchorage Honors College is pleased to welcome Dr. Michael Honey as its 2008 Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium keynote speaker. On Thursday, April 10 Honey will give a free lecture entitled, “Going Down Jericho Road: The Memphis Strike, Martin Luther King’s Last Campaign.” The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in UAA’s Fine Arts Building, room 150. This event is tied to the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
In his lecture Michael Honey will describe the magnetic characters who clashed on the Memphis battlefield: stalwart black workers; fiery black ministers; volatile, young, black-power advocates; idealistic organizers and tough-talking unionists; the first black members of the Memphis city council; the white upper crust who sought to prevent change or conflagration; and, finally, the magisterial Martin Luther King Jr., undertaking a Poor People’s Campaign at the crossroads of his life, vilified as a subversive, hounded by the FBI, and seeing in the working poor of Memphis his hopes for a better America.
Dr. Honey has emerged as one of the most well known national experts on the events surrounding Dr. King’s assassination. He is a professor of labor and ethnic studies, and American history at the University of Washington, Tacoma (UWT); the author of two prize-winning books on labor and civil rights history; and a former Southern civil liberties organizer. Honey holds the Fred T. and Dorothy G. Haley Endowed Professorship in the Humanities at UWT. Additionally, he is president-elect of the Labor and Working-Class History Association, a national association of labor scholars and activists.
