UAA Music Professor, Students Offer Clarinet Classes to Area 6th Graders

By: Lori Keim  Sep 14, 2005

Seven one-hour classes feature low tuition, expert instruction

University of Alaska Anchorage music professor Dr. Mark Wolbers begins a year-long series of one-hour classes in October aimed at helping 6th-grade beginning clarinet students master the basics of playing their instruments. The goal is to support the students’ progress in school music programs and future private instruction. Tuition for the fall semester of classes, including instructional materials, is only $25.

The initial seven-week course will be followed by another ten weeks of instruction, scheduled to begin in January.

Wolbers donates his time teaching the class in an effort to make the class as affordable as possible. “This is a crucial time for beginning students. A good start is really important for their future musical success,” Wolbers explained.

Wolbers holds a doctorate in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan. Now in his fourteenth year teaching at UAA, he serves as conductor of the University Wind Ensemble and coordinates the music education program.

Through this program, Wolbers also provides a service learning opportunity for UAA music majors when they assist him with teaching and mentoring the sixth graders.

The clarinet class will meet on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. in UAA Fine Arts Building room 124 beginning October 14. As noted, the $25 tuition covers enrollment and instructional materials. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend, and parking is free. Students may pre-register or register at the door before the first class meeting. Because enrollment is limited to 50, pre-registration is encouraged.

For more information or to obtain a registration application, please contact Dr. Wolbers by phone at (907) 786-1508 or by email at afmew@uaa.alaska.edu.
