UAA Issues Statement on Hockey Incident

By: Nate Sagan  Sep 20, 2004

University of Alaska Anchorage athletic director Steve Cobb announced today that he and Seawolf head coach John Hill have concluded the investigation into the Sept. 12 incident involving hockey players Lee Green and Brett Arcand-Kootenay and reached a decision regarding the playing status of Green.

In addition, Green has issued a statement of his own.

Dr. Steve Cobb – UAA Athletic Director “After completing an investigation into the unfortunate events involving UAA hockey players, Coach (John) Hill and I have reached a decision regarding the matter.

Lee Green will be removed as team captain, and he will not be permitted to participate in UAA’s Oct. 9 exhibition game in Soldotna (his hometown), in the Nye Frontier Classic, and in the Oct. 22 game against Alaska Fairbanks.

He will face additional sanctions and discipline that will be a matter between Coach Hill and himself.

“While we are commenting on this situation due to its public nature, it will remain our policy not to publicly report on team discipline matters, out of respect for the privacy and welfare of all our student- athletes. Our intent in this and all matters is to render appropriate decisions in the best interests of UAA and our student-athletes."

“This incident has affected the entire UAA family and profoundly affected the lives of two fine young men. We remain committed to the higher values of athletic competition and have every confidence that Coach Hill and his staff will provide the necessary leadership to overcome this incident. We are actively supporting both young men and their families with their current obstacles and difficulties surrounding the situation.”

John Hill – UAA Hockey Head Coach “My only concern at this point is for the welfare of both Brett and Lee. My wish is that they can both heal physically and emotionally as soon as possible and resume what is most important in their lives – going to class and playing hockey at the University of Alaska Anchorage.”

Lee Green – UAA senior defenseman “I’d like to express my extreme remorse for the regrettable situation which has transpired. I feel terrible for what Brett and his family are going through and offer my most sincere apologies. I’d also like to apologize to my teammates, UAA and our fans.”
