Tools and Techniques for Access Workshop Series

Fridays at 2pm in RH 106 (each topic is offered twice each semester)

live scribe notetaking systemNotetaking Strategies - Use of Alphasmarts, tablet laptops, digital recorders, or the new Livescribe system can offer alternatives to the traditional pen and paper approach to notetaking.

September 4 and October 9

Talking computerReading Options - A lot of people benefit from being able to listen rather than just read visually. There are computer programs that can read text out loud, highlighting each word along the way. Some of these programs can also turn text into MP3 recordings.

September 11 and October 16

MicrophoneWriting Supports - Many individuals have difficulty translating their thoughts into written form. Approaches such as dictation, whereby spoken language is converted to typed text, or word prediction, whereby fewer keystrokes are required to input words can be helpful. It can also be useful to get a jumpstart on the writing process by using an outline generation tool such as Inspiration which allows users to brainstorm in a concept map mode. Finally, proofreading written work by listening to it out loud can help writers to catch mistakes.

September 18 and October 23

The tools and techniques workshop series will also be offered in the Spring semester.

  • Reading Options - January 22 and February 19
  • Writing Supports - January 29 and February 26
