The Women of Lockerbie

The Women of Lockerbieis a fictional play set in Lockerbie, Scotland seven years after the explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988. The bombing killed all 259 passengers on board the plane plus 11 people on the ground, destroyed 21 homes, and strewed wreckage across 50 square miles. Until the September 11 attacks, it was the worst act of terrorism against civilians that the United States had ever experienced.
In a cathartic response to the horror and tragedy, the people of Lockerbie gathered up the clothing and other belongings that were scattered throughout the countryside, then washed, ironed, and repacked it to return the items to the victims’ families. The play tells the fictional story of the parents of one American victim who travel to Scotland for a memorial service and are finally able to come to terms with the death of their son with the help of the women who started the Laundry Project.
