University of Alaska student media is comprised of the Student Media Board, campus radio station KRUA 88.1 FM, and campus newspaper The Northern Light. The Student Media office is located within the department of Campus Life. Student Media Board
The University of Alaska Anchorage Media Board selects student media managers, approves media policies and media budgets, and adjudicates complaints.
The Board is comprised of seven voting members: one USUAA appointed student, one JPC-appointed student, two UAA students-at-large, two faculty advisors, and one community member: and four non-voting members, including two media managers, the administrative advisor and board secretary.
Media Fees
KRUA and The Northern Light are independent media resources representing students at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Both organizations receive funding from UAA student fees. Students pay an $11.00 media fee, of which KRUA receives $5.25 and The Northern Light receives $5.75.
KRUA 88.1 FM
KRUA's broadcast license is owned by the University of Alaska Board of Regents and is licensed as an non-commercial, educational FM radio station by the Federal Communications Commission.
KRUA 88.1 FM is an educational station created in order to enhance the student experience at the University of Alaska Anchorage by providing music, news, sports, campus event coverage and real-life broadcast situations. KRUA employs ten students and trains over 90 volunteer DJs each year and partners with the Journalism & Public Communications department to provide training and hands-on experience for JPC and other students.
The Northern Light
The Northern Light is a weekly University of Alaska Anchorage student publication, funded by both media fees and advertising sales. Published every Tuesday during the school year and every second Tuesday during the summer, The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. The Northern Light distributes approximately 500 copies per week during the academic school year, and 2000 copies per week in the summer.
The Northern Light is an educational news organization providing reporting, layout, photography, administrative, managerial, and marketing experience for students and employees, and offers free writing workshops to interested UAA staff, faculty and students each semester.
