What is an Academic Petition?
Academic Petitions are exceptions to UAA Academic Policies and Procedures.
At what stage in the academic process is an academic petition completed?
Academic petitions may be completed at any stage during the student academic life cycle.
What Requirements can be petitioned?
Academic petitions may be submitted for degree/major or school and college requirements. Some requirements that cannot be petitioned include:
Taking a course at UAA that is not a GER and then petitioning that course to be used as a GER requirement.
Waiving overall GUR/GER requirements below the UAA recommended amount, such as graduating with 117 credits instead of 120.
Petitioning to graduate under a specific catalog year that is not the admission or exiting catalog year.
Petitioning to use a 500 or professional level course towards an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Petitioning to use a graduate course that was used in an undergraduate degree towards a graduate degree.
What documentation is required for an academic petition?
Attach relevant course descriptions, a copy of the student’s transcript, other supporting documentation that supports the petitioned requirement.
What signatures are required on an academic petition?
The student, Academic advisor, Department Chair for the petitioned course, Chair Person for the student major and the Dean of the School or College of the degree/major.
How long does it take to process an academic petition?
The timeline for academic petitions vary based on the requirements being petitioned. (Estimated time may be as short as a week or as long as 2 months). Petitions that take up to 2 months to process are usually missing supporting documentation and are being submitted for General University Requirements or General Education Requirements.
How will I know my academic petition has been processed?
A copy of the processed academic petition is sent to the student, and the academic department.
Do academic petitions show up on Wolflink?
Academic petitions do not show up on wolflink. They are merely exceptions to UAA policy, which are applied to the student file when they apply for graduation.
