The Topics in Higher Education Book Group will provide faculty with an opportunity to read and discuss publications exploring higher education. Although faculty may read publications related to higher education, we often do so in isolation. THE Book Group will give us a chance to read, discuss with others, and consider the implications of these works for our teaching, scholarship, and service.

 Fall 2012 With the increased presence of students of the millennial generation on college campuses, much has been said and written about the changing dynamics of teaching and learning. CAFE has offered webinars designed to help faculty understand and better reach students in this demographic, and our campus has hosted nationally-recognized speakers with expertise in this area. For the 2012-2013 installment of CAFE’s Topics in Higher Education (THE) Book Group, faculty members are invited to read and discuss Dr. Jean Twenge and Dr. Keith Campbell‘s book The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement. Dr. Jean Twenge, who recently spoke at UAA on this topic, is Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University. Her co-author, Dr. Keith Campbell, is Department Head and Professor in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences Program in the Department of Psychology at University of Georgia. Dr. Kathleen Vohs, University of Minnesota McKnight Land-Grant Professor and editor of text Self and Relationships: Connecting Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Processes calls The Narcissism Epidemic "A must-read for anyone who is a parent, a relationship partner, in the workforce, in school, or on the job market.” Vohs notes that “Twenge and Campbell not only define narcissism but detail its antecedents, consequences, and underlying processes in a way that brings together so much of what one sees in modern western culture. Grounded in research and peppered with media and anecdotal stories, The Narcissism Epidemic offers practical, much-needed solutions to coping in the age of entitlement." Participants in THE Book Group are encouraged to read the book over the summer in preparation for three brown bag discussion sessions in the fall term. Discussions will take place from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon on Fridays, September 14, October 12, and November 9. The meeting location and theme, issues and discussion questions for each session will be announced in the fall.
CAFE is able to support the purchase of a limited number of copies of the book in either hard copy or digital format for faculty who attend all three discussion sessions. If you are interested in participating, please register below and indicate whether you would like a hard or ebook version of the book (ebook versions will need to be purchased by you and then reimbursed).
