Help Prevent Student Suicide:
A Workshop for UAA Faculty

Suicide is a serious concern among UAA students. Research shows 22% of students at UAA have experienced suicidal ideation or have attempted suicide at some point in their lives. Of these, 6% are considered at very high risk, reporting suicidal ideation or attempting suicide within the last 12 months. Among UAA faculty, 40% have had a student they were concerned was at risk for suicide, yet less than one fourth report confidence in recognizing the warning signs of suicide.

UAA faculty members are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the lives of students in this area.  Join us as staff from the Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services discuss verbal and behavioral clues associated with suicide risk among college students, offer ideas on how to encourage help-seeking, and provide information about campus and community support services.

Changing Lenses:  Building Cross-Cultural Connections in the Classroom

GHH 103  11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Are you interested in stepping outside your own culture by participating in a culture or spirit camp experience?
Each of us, as a faculty member or student, has a home culture that is different from that of others in the classroom.  Last summer, 5 CBPP faculty members were immersed into 5 different Alaskan Native cultures. They were given the unique opportunity to step outside their own culture and to view it from the "Bush" perspective.

In this 90-minute interactive session, you will be challenged to examine your own cultural heritage and how it impacts your teaching.By changing your perspective, you will be able to recognize how you are immersed in, and a product of your own culture. You will then be better able to view your classroom and assignments from the perspective of its different cultures, and how those differences affect student success. As you reflect on these "immersion" stories, you will gain a greater sensitivity of the importance of respecting the values, beliefs, and customs of other cultures in general, and those of Alaskan Natives in particular. By building mutual respect and understanding, you can strengthen relationships and foster a greater sense of community, and design cross-cultural connections into your classroom.A 30-minute panel question-and-answer discussion will follow the session. Please join us to find out how you can apply for the Alaska Humanity Forum's Educator Cross-Cultural Immersion Program.
