The Undergraduate Mentoring Seminar Series will educate faculty about the importance of mentoring undergraduates in research and scholarship and disseminate best known practices regarding undergraduate research. The goal is for faculty members to learn how to integrate undergraduates into their research program and to act on this knowledge. The Seminar Series will be conducted in a two semester sequence (see below).

Faculty will have the option of earning a certificate in undergraduate mentoring upon completion of four of the six seminars in Fall 2008, and completion of a proposal for integrating undergraduates into a research project.

Fall 2008

Six seminars will be held in Fall 2008, open to all faculty who are interested. Three will be of general interest to faculty across disciplines, and three will focus on specific areas of research and scholarship.

Spring 2009

During the second semester of the Undergraduate Mentoring Seminar Series, activities are focused on faculty pursuing the undergraduate mentoring certificate. Certificate participants will be required to write a proposal on how undergraduates will be integrated into their research and scholarship program. The document will be evaluated by a faculty review committee to assess the quality of the proposal. If the faculty member’s proposal passes the criteria of the committee, the participant will be awarded a Certificate of Completion at the annual Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium. The participants will also be expected to give a short presentation outlining their proposal and research program.  The second semester of the Undergraduate Mentoring Seminar Series will be conducted according to the following schedule.
