Co-sponsored by College of Education, AEIN grant, and CAFE. CIDER engages faculty in a collaborative process for peer review of distance education courses. The process itself fosters the sharing of ideas for course improvement in a collegial environment. The CIDER rubric and course checklist provide standards and guidelines for excellence in distance education. The CIDER Rubric encompasses 12 standards in 4 strands that research indicates must be present in the design of a distance course. For a course to reflect CIDER standards, 85% of each standard must be met. The four strands in the rubric are: Course Overview, Introduction, Design, and Navigation; Enduring Understandings and Learning Objectives; Assessment and Measurement; and Instructional Materials, Pedagogy, and Learner Engagement. After the initial overview, two sessions will focus on each of the CIDER strands. In the first session for each strand, we'll look at several courses to discern ways a course could meet the standards. Faculty will then work on one of their courses in the context of this strand and bring their work to the second session for review by their peers. After completing all 4 strands, the group will do a formal peer review of a selected course in the final session.
